GET TO KNOW

The Bernese Mountain Dog

Origin of the Bernese Mountain Dog...

Two thousand years ago, Roman soldiers invaded Switzerland, using the strength and intelligence of guardian dogs to guide them, pulling carts, moving cattle, and acting as watch dogs. Eventually the Roman Mastiffs were bred with the Swiss guardian dog to produce what we know today as the Bernese Mountain Dog.

They are a working class dog named for the Canton of Bern region of Switzerland. Farmers in the region depended on Berners to pull milk carts and wagons, and helped herd small groups of cattle.  The breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1937 and in 1968 the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of American was formed.
